Can You Add Lights to a Pool?
Pool lights are a great feature for any pool – letting you use your pool all night long! In this article, we take a look at why pools lights are a great feature, and how you can add them to your pool.
Why do I need pool lights?
For inground pools, lighting can be important for a number of reasons. On the aesthetic side, pool lights can add a subtle layer of sophistication, gently illuminating the pool without being garish or dominating the spectacle.
The lights are beautiful whether you’re in the pool or not; you can be swimming in the glimmering water or you can simply admire it from afar – the visual benefits are clear to see.
Pool lights are also an effective and important safety feature; they can stop people accidentally falling into the pool at night, which can be easy to do if there’s no lights either in the pool or around it.
Can I add lights to my pool?
You can add pool lights to your existing pool, but it might mean that your pool needs to be remodelled, which requires a considerable amount of work. If you have an older pool, it could be a good chance to combine your need for lights with the need for a pool refresh.
If pool lights sound appealing to you, then it’s a good idea to have them installed during the construction of your swimming pool – as there will be large-scale construction works taking place anyway, the installation of lights will blend into the process.
How do pool lights work?
A common concern for people looking at buying pool lights is the combination of electricity and water.
While this is an understandable concern, you don’t need to panic: pool lights are completely sealed, meaning the water won’t affect them and they don’t pose a risk to those in the water. They also make use of a ground fault circuit interrupter (GCFI) which shuts off the power if any sort of leak is detected.
How many lights do I need for my pool?
The amount of lights you need depends on the size of your pool. For larger pools, two is the minimum recommendation, with three lights being a common amount. Pools smaller than 30’ can be illuminated with a single light, but two lights may be preferable.
What types of pool lights are there?
There are three main types of pool light:
- LED Lights: These are by far the most widely-used type of pool light, thanks to their brightness, their efficiency and their long lifespan.
- Fibre Optic Lights: These allow for colour changing options, but they are expensive and they lack the brightness of LEDs.
- Incandescent bulbs: These were once the market leader, until the invention of LEDs and fiber optics. These lights are very bright, but they have a considerably shorter lifespan than LED lights, and they’re considered somewhat antiquated due to their low efficiency.
Pool lights are a wonderful addition to any swimming pool, for both aesthetic, practical and safety reasons. What’s important is that your pool lights are installed correctly, by fully trained and qualified engineers.
